So the big question now is: what's with Rahul Gandhi and his 40th birthday trip? Flying commercial seems a hazard for him now. Besides the obvious security snafus, he has had a double whammy this trip. First his Virgin Air flight gets tarmac marooned in Delhi for over an hour. And on his return, the invaluable local mobile gets flicked from his check-in bag (albeit from another trip). Now no national secrets may yet be compromised but all these signals don't quite augur well. Taunted by the sudden spurt in honour killings in the capital, the Centre is waking to the fact that the phenomenon extends beyond the wilder parts of rural North India. The recent spate of honour killings in Delhi has set off a media feeding frenzy and has made the local authorities jumpy. The government now hopes that the proposed ordinance, pushed by Home Minister P Chidambaram and Law Minister Veerappa Moily, will be stringent enough to deter the khap panchayats. But with weak-willed politicians fearful of losing their vote banks, neither an ordinance nor policing is going to work against the sweeping moral sanctions that the khaps have suddenly acquired. Dilli's T3 From being routinely ranked among the worst airports, Dilli's Indira Gandhi International Airport, with its spanking new state-of-the-art new terminal, will now keep better company. The relief is perhaps greatest for travellers who have suffered the most during the construction of the terminal. And the timing couldn't be better, with Delhi already South Asia's biggest aviation hub, having surpassed Mumbai last year, traditionally the nation's busiest airport.
