A 21-year-old law student was injured after his bike skidded due to a pothole on the Western Express Highway’s Andheri flyover, our front page report read. His helmet was crushed by a cement mixer truck. The young man sustained head and hand injuries and was being treated at a suburban hospital at the time the report was published.
He cited in the report that he was wearing a helmet, and when he approached the Andheri flyover, his bike skidded as there was a huge pothole.
He fell, and a running cement mixer crushed his helmet. He survived though he sustained head and hand injuries. He stated that authorities who ignored this crater should get the strictest punishment, even though he escaped death. He denied speeding or riding zig-zag, blaming the pothole for his accident.
Casting an eye on survival, it is important to note that the headgear saved this man’s life. Wear a helmet; it will make the difference between life and death, that is the bottom line. A concerted helmet campaign has raised awareness and ensured that more riders are wearing helmets. Yet, we have witnessed, unfortunately in fact, that riders who are hauled up for not adhering to the rule, arguing with cops and authorities.
At times, they say that they have removed the helmet only for a few minutes, pointing at it on their bike, or come up with some other excuses that it was very hot or that they were just about to put it on or some such.
Several times, the helmet itself is not of good quality or what is needed as a shield. It is a cheap, flimsy version which cracks and breaks easily, giving a false sense of security to the wearer and, in fact, imperilling him at the same time. A helmet is necessary, use your head wisely and sheath yourself.
