We welcome authorities stepping on the accelerator with regard to air quality. Reports stated that the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has intensified its inspection of construction sites to curb rising air pollution in the city.
During a recent drive, the civic body&rsquo;s Pollution Control Department inspected 80 construction sites, issued show-cause notices to 68 for alleged non-compliance and imposed fines totalling Rs 3.5 lakh.
The action was taken in accordance with directions issued by the High Power Committee (HPC), constituted by the Bombay High Court under suo motu PIL of 2023, they said. The civic body&rsquo;s officials walked the talk as they visited construction sites across Thane to check whether adequate measures had been put in place to prevent dust and other pollutants from spreading. The sites need to comply with dust-control arrangements, as cited by guidelines. There were several show-cause notices and fines imposed.&nbsp;
Large-scale tree felling and green-lighting projects, whether necessary or not, is not the point of this edit, has resulted in climate change, zooming air pollution. Recently, Mumbai was in the headlines with air quality nose-diving and becoming equal to or worse than New Delhi.
A large number of buildings are undergoing redevelopment. The layout of the city means that buildings are clubbed close together and construction dust is rising everywhere. So boarding up is a must as are other dust control measures.
Frequent inspections, surprise checks and most importantly, action post-inspection send a tough, non-negotiable message.
