While Swami Vivekananda Road already suffers from poor pedestrian infrastructure, commuters now have a new problem. At the junction where GR Varasakar Marg meets SV Road near the Bharat Petroleum petrol pump in Bandra, a large metal lid placed over a sunken utility cover has become a daily hazard for riders, said our report.

The temporary lid has a smooth, frictionless surface and sits about an inch above road level, causing two-wheeler riders to skid and fall, especially when the road is wet. A petrol pump attendant said they help riders who have fallen almost daily.

Traffic police constables stationed at the junction echoed the concerns, stating that they have repeatedly written to the BMC. Shockingly, even at the time this report was being written, a bike rider skidded and fell on the surface.

Fortunately, other vehicles were able to brake in time. However, it is only a matter of time before a speeding vehicle will be unable to stop in time and run over a fallen person.

This despite the spot being flagged numerous times and complaints raised by several agencies. It is criminal that nobody has taken action despite so many complaints. What is the use of having citizen forums, complaint avenues helpline numbers, etc. for access, when complaints in your face are being ignored?

We hope action is taken by the time you read this. It is disappointing that a newspaper has had to highlight this instead of authorities waking up and acting of their own volition. All the initiatives, such as traffic safety week, fly in the face of this callous neglect. Besides action, those responsible for sitting back without paying attention need to be hauled up, too.
