Geneva: An Asian man has paid a record $31.6 million (R210 crore approximately) for an extremely rare 15.38 carat pear-shaped pink diamond auctioned at Sotheby&rsquo;s, making it the most expensive fancy vivid pink diamond ever to go under the hammer.

The rare gem called the &lsquo;Unique Pink&rsquo; is set in a simple ring and was bought yesterday by an Asian private buyer, who bid for it over the telephone and whose identity has not been disclosed.

&ldquo;The Unique Pink set a new world record for a fancy vivid pink diamond... It&rsquo;s the highest price ever paid for a fancy vivid pink diamond,&rdquo; said David Bennett, worldwide chairman of Sotheby&rsquo;s international jewellery division. Yesterday&rsquo;s sale eclipsed the previous record of $28.5 million.
