London: British Prime Minister David Cameron stepped down on Wednesday and former Home Secretary Theresa May succeeded him at 10, Downing Street.

Cameron took part in his final Prime Minister&rsquo;s Questions, before heading to Buckingham Palace to tender his resignation to the Queen. &ldquo;As I leave today [Wednesday], I hope that people will see a stronger country. It has been a privilege to serve the country I love,&rdquo; he told the media.
He said post-Brexit the UK should &ldquo;try and be as close to the European Union as we can be&rdquo;. In his last address to parliament, he said he would advise his successor that British trade, cooperation and security would be best served by a close relationship with Europe.
Cameron was given a standing ovation in the House of Commons.
Future plans Cameron, who has said he plans to continue as MP for Witney in Oxfordshire, faced Prime Minister&rsquo;s Questions for the 182nd and final time as the PM &mdash; his 319th in total as Tory leader.
Tough-talking May is expected to bring a very different flavour to Downing Street, with her penchant for flamboyant shoes and no-nonsense attitude.
Since her term is expected to champion the cause of women in politics, Indian-origin employment minister, Priti Patel, can expect a promotion from a junior ministerial role under David Cameron.
