<p>US President Donald Trump has described socialism as the greatest threat facing the United States, using strong criticism of New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani and warning that the country risked moving towards what he called communism.</p>
<p>Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Monday, Trump made the remarks after being asked about <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/world-news/article/will-work-with-trump-on-any-agenda-that-benefits-new-yorkers-zohran-mamdani-23604218" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Mamdani's recent statement</a> that he was willing to be the "poster child" for socialist candidates.</p>

<p>Responding to the question, Trump argued that the term "socialism" did not accurately describe the political ideology he believes some candidates are promoting.</p>
<p>"I think it's a big threat to our nation, actually, because it's not socialism, it's really communism," Trump said.</p>
<p>"They use the word social Democrat because it sounds so nice, but it's really communism you're talking about."</p>
<p>His comments marked the latest Republican criticism of progressive Democratic policies, which conservatives have frequently characterised as socialist or communist.</p>

<p>"I think it's the biggest threat to our nation there is, maybe since our founding," Trump said.</p>
<p>"That includes World War I, World War II, September 11th. It includes the Pearl Harbor attack."</p>
<p>The president acknowledged that some people might disagree with the comparison but maintained that the threat was significant.</p>
<p>"People will smile when I say that, but the smart people are going to say, you know, he's probably right."</p>

<p>Trump reiterated his claim that the ideology being promoted by some political leaders amounted to communism rather than social democracy.</p>
<p>"It's basically introducing communism into the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/world-news/article/mamdani-speaks-with-trump-terms-us-action-in-venezuela-act-of-war-23610613" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">United States of America</a>. There's never been anything so dangerous."</p>
<p>The remarks came during a wide-ranging question-and-answer session in the Oval Office that covered several domestic and international issues, including Iran, immigration, election legislation and recent Supreme Court rulings before turning to US politics.</p>

<p>Accusations of socialism have long been a feature of political debate in the United States, particularly during discussions on healthcare, taxation, welfare programmes and the role of government in the economy.</p>
<p>Progressive Democrats generally describe their policies as being rooted in social democracy, advocating greater government involvement in areas such as healthcare, housing and social welfare. Republicans, meanwhile, have consistently argued that such policies expand government control and move the country towards socialism.</p>
<p>Trump has repeatedly made opposition to socialism a central theme of his political messaging, portraying it as incompatible with the country's economic system and democratic values.</p>
