New laboratory research revealed that rocky planets like Earth may have generated their own water 4.5 billion years ago, challenging the long-standing theory that oceans came exclusively from comets or meteorites.

High-temperature experiments show that iron-oxide-bearing silicate rocks reacting with a hydrogen-rich atmosphere could convert iron oxide into metallic iron while releasing substantial water vapour. This suggests that hundreds of oceans’ worth of water could have naturally formed internally.
