In the fastest early turnout rate since 1981 (16.7 per cent within three hours), Israel voters on Tuesday turned out in highest numbers since 1973. Marking the first election since the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attacks, the vote serves as a wartime judgment on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Voters remain deeply divided over the trauma of Israel’s deadliest day and the ensuing wars in Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran. While Netanyahu’s right-wing coalition faces domestic opposition and international isolation, the 19-year leader defends his record as the only one tough enough to confront Israel’s foes.
