<div>Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak resigned, handing over power to the military, Vice President Omar Suleiman announced.</div><div><br /></div><div>"Mubarak has decided to resign as president," Suleiman announced in a brief statement on state TV, the BBC reported.</div><div><br /></div><div>The announcement came as thousands of demonstrators gathered in Cairo and other Egyptian cities for the 18th day of protest to demand Mubarak's resignation.</div><div><br /></div><div>Protesters responded by cheering, waving flags, embracing and sounding car horns.</div><div><br /></div><div>"The people have brought down the regime," they chanted.</div>
