A new atmosphere-breathing electric propulsion system could allow satellites in Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO) to stay in orbit indefinitely without carrying conventional propellant.

Developed by University of Stuttgart researcher Francesco Romano, the engine scoops atmospheric gases, converts them into plasma, and expels them to counteract drag.
