US President Donald Trump has weighed in on the New York Mayor Elections 2025, attacking Democratic Socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani and urging voters to back former Governor Andrew Cuomo instead. Trump labelled Mamdani “a Communist” and claimed his victory would lead to “complete and total disaster” for the city, news agency ANI reported.
In a lengthy post on Truth Social, Trump said he would restrict federal funding to New York if Mamdani were elected.
“If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the election for Mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the minimum required, to my beloved first home,” Trump wrote, adding, “As a Communist, this once-great city has ZERO chance of survival. It can only get worse with a Communist at the helm.”
The US President said it was his duty to protect national interests and warned that New York would face “a complete and total economic and social disaster” under Mamdani’s leadership.
Trump, who has had a complicated history with Cuomo, said he would rather see the Democrat win than Mamdani, ANI reported.
“I would much rather see a Democrat, who has had a record of success, win than a Communist with no experience and a record of total failure,” he wrote. “Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice. You must vote for him and hope he does a fantastic job. He is capable of it. Mamdani is not.”
The US President also took a jab at Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, warning that “a vote for Sliwa is a vote for Mamdani”.
During a recent CBS 60 Minutes interview, Trump reiterated his position, saying it would be difficult to allocate federal money to a “Communist-run” New York City.
“If it’s between a bad Democrat and a Communist, I’ll pick the bad Democrat every time,” he said.
Mamdani, 34, a New York State Assembly member and Democratic Socialist born in Uganda, responded on X with a sarcastic post: “Congratulations, @AndrewCuomo. I know how hard you worked for this,” he wrote, sharing a graphic reading ‘TRUMP endorses CUOMO’.
According to The Hill, Mamdani currently leads the race with 50 per cent support, followed by Cuomo at 25 per cent and Republican Curtis Sliwa at 21 per cent, with around 4 per cent of voters undecided.
