Researchers at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) have designed MiPAL, a low-cost, single-element speaker that beams audio directly to a single listener like a ray of light.
Utilising acoustic and elastic metamaterials, the system modulates ultrasound waves to harness sound’s nonlinear behavior in air, sharply focusing audio while blocking side leakage.
