The FAA requires eight kilometres between a C-17 and the next airplane, but the Obama's jet was just 4.8 kilometres away. US air traffic controllers have faced heavy scrutiny recently after a series of incidents in which some fell asleep while on duty, leading officials to announce a new "zero tolerance" approach for such activities. Transportation officials monitoring some of the world's busiest air traffic have been red-faced as case after case of workers snoozing in US airport towers came to light in recent weeks, in some incidents leaving pilots of passenger jets to land unassisted in Washington.
