The conflict between the United States and Iran has intensified sharply, with US President Donald Trump warning of devastating consequences if Iran does not comply with US demands.
In a strongly worded message, Trump said, “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will.” His remarks highlighted the seriousness of the situation and the possibility of further escalation.
Deadline over Strait of Hormuz raises stakes
At the centre of the crisis is the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil transport. Trump has set a deadline for Iran to reopen the waterway, warning of severe consequences if it fails to do so.
He has also indicated that the US could target critical infrastructure such as bridges and power plants, further raising concerns about the scale of potential action.
Military strikes and growing pressure
The situation has been worsening over recent weeks, with US and allied forces carrying out strikes on Iranian-linked targets. Reports suggest that key locations, including the vital oil hub at Kharg Island, have come under attack.
Despite the pressure, Iran has not backed down and has maintained a firm stance, rejecting US demands and warning of retaliation.
Signals of regime change and uncertainty
On Truth Social, Trump left the door open for a last-hour agreement.
"Now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change, where different, smarter, and less radicalised minds prevail, maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen, WHO KNOWS? We will find out tonight," he wrote, as per AFP reports.
He also delivered a sweeping critique of Iran’s leadership since the Islamic Revolution. “47 years of extortion, corruption, and death, will finally end,” Trump added, reported IANS. He closed his message with a direct appeal: “God Bless the Great People of Iran!”
Alongside Trump, vice president JD Vance warned that the US has additional capabilities it has not yet used, signalling that further escalation remains possible.
At the same time, critics have expressed concern over the strong language and rising tensions, warning that the situation could lead to serious global consequences.
A region on edge
With a deadline approaching and both sides holding firm, the situation remains highly uncertain. The outcome could have far-reaching effects not just for the region, but for global energy supply and international stability.
As the world watches closely, the coming hours are expected to be critical in determining the next phase of this high-stakes confrontation.
