Earlier this month, El-Sayed told reporters that he appreciated Obama and described him as “foundational” to his decision to enter electoral politics, while acknowledging differences over aspects of the former president’s administration.

Barack Obama will campaign on Saturday with Democratic candidates for the US Senate in Ohio and Michigan, both highly competitive states that will help determine control of the chamber, as the former president ramps up his involvement in the midterm elections. Obama’s first event is in Cleveland with former three-term Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown, who is looking to unseat Republican Senator Jon Acton; a Democrat running for governor against Republican Vivek Ramaswamy will also appear at the rally.
Following his Ohio appearance, Obama will travel to Detroit, Michigan, to campaign for Abdul El-Sayed, a former public health official seeking to consolidate Democratic support after winning a closely contested primary by less than one percentage point.
