People love to decorate their phones — if it is with them the entire day, of course it has to look as attractive as their other accessories. They get cool phone cases and phone charms; stylise their phones according to their own aesthetic. That, however, was not the motive behind a new, “heavy-duty” phone case designed by Matter Neuroscience, a start-up based in the US.

The case is made of stainless steel and weighs 6 pounds, approximately 2.7 kg. It is heavier than a Macbook Pro laptop. To add to the shock, it comprises two pieces that need to be screwed together with the phone. Their purpose was to try and cause an overall reduction in smart phone usage and screentime, but the sheer inconvenience has perhaps put people off trying it at all.

The creators have ensured that the case does not fit in your pocket, thus reducing the number of times that you will take it out and check it. The physical fatigue from the weight naturally reminds everyone to put the phone down, unless someone’s a huge gym bro and loves to pick up weights all the time.

The phone case is currently in its crowdfunding stage on Kickstarter, and people can preorder it for $210, which is around R17,000. It is a huge price but, hey, smart phone addicts should absolutely get it to battle their addiction.

A couple in Istanbul — Buğra B and his wife Ezgi B, filed for divorce mutually, stating that they were severely incompatible. They agreed on no alimony or any other forms of  financial compensation, but their divorce statement had a rather strange agreement: it states that the husband has transferred the custody of their two cats to the wife, promising to provide for them financially. The document states that the husband will pay 10,000 liras (approximately R21,000) per month,  It also states that the amount may increase in the future. Here’s a fur dad who stepped up.

Your smile is so millennial-coded

After mocking 30-somethings for the millennial pause while recording videos or just using the phrase “back in my day”, Gen Z has found a new jab — the millennial smile. It’s a dig at the way millennials purse their lips a little without lifting their cheekbones or showing any teeth, while their head tilts slightly. After skinny jeans and LOL texts, Gen Z has found the next uncool thing to roast millennials over.

Can you, like, quit the Valley Girl accent?

The Valley Girl accent has always been a thing for Americans, but people are noticing it even more since the ads that Sydney Sweeney did for American Eagle. The accent features excessive use of filler words, and Americans are now insecure about it. This has led to the “no filler words trend” —people are trying to speak for 30 seconds without using any filler words. Um, so, it’s like, trending right now.

Statue-tory crime

In Hangzhou, China, kneel the statues of Qin Hui and his wife, allegedly the most hated people throughout Chinese history. The stone avatars are on their knees for treason, facing the mausoleum of the general that they had framed. As if that was not punishment enough, the locals constantly slap their statues, sometimes even going as far as kicking them. No rest for the wicked!

Japanese company Suntory has launched a new special water. It looks just like regular water, but the company claims that it is functional food, which means that it has health benefits. Special water is aimed towards people who work for long hours in the office and those with irregular lifestyles. It contains a small-molecule metabolite derived from fermented rice bran that can help reduce abdominal fat, especially visceral fat. A 50-something woman from South Korea got scammed by a person posing as the Squid Game actor Lee Jung-Jae. The scammer began using AI-generated images to form a closer relationship with her. She trusted him so blindly that she gave him a total of $350,000, around R3 lakh. The scammer truly stopped at nothing to win.
