The US launched unannounced strikes on Iranian targets in a limited operation prior to the crucial US midterm elections. Iranian state media reported explosions in Bandar Abbas and on the strategic Strait of Hormuz islands of Qeshm and Hengam.

A US official speaking anonymously confirmed the strikes targeted Iranians using surface-to-air missiles against US forces in the strait. President Donald Trump had previously stated the US would not strike Iran before the midterms, as the unpopular war and its toll on gasoline prices and the economy remain major vulnerabilities for Republicans attempting to retain control of Congress.
