Rescuers worked through Friday night to save hundreds trapped in rubble and find thousands missing after two of the biggest earthquakes in Latin America’s modern history, recording magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, destroyed areas in and around the capital Caracas. The government confirmed 589 deaths, with 2980 people injured.

A website created to track missing people listed more than 49,600 as unaccounted for, while the US Geological Survey predicted over 10,000 deaths. Spain’s foreign ministry said three of its nationals had died, and four were trapped under rubble, while 99 were unaccounted for.
