If Gill stays fit and is available, he may lead the "Men in Blue" in the 2027 World Cup, scheduled to be held in South Africa and Zimbabwe. There may be chances of him leading the side in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, too

On Tuesday, while announcing the Indian squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, the chief selector picked Shubman Gill as the Team India Vice-Captain.
His appointment as Suryakumar Yadav’s deputy indicates that India’s think tank may be leaning back towards the tried-and-tested one-captain-for-all-formats policy in the near future.
It seems like head coach Gautam Gambhir and the current selection committee are on the same page when it comes to the leadership concerns of the team.
If Gill stays fit and is available, he may lead the "Men in Blue" in the 2027 World Cup, which is scheduled to be held in South Africa and Zimbabwe. There may be chances of him leading the side in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, too.
When asked about Gill's appointment as captain across all the formats of the game, Agarkar stayed tight-lipped. He said, "Gill's form in England was something we expected but he exceeded it all".
Speaking on Gill's batting position, the selector said that they will take a call based on the pitch conditions.
"There are more options (for top order) now and Shubman has been in a great form anyway. When they get to Dubai, they can decide on the playing XI according to the opposition and the conditions," he said.
Additionally, playing Sanju Samson would mean that from No 3 to No 5, there will be three right-handers: Samson himself, Surya and Hardik Pandya, which makes the batting composition look one-dimensional. Playing Jitesh Sharma as a finisher-cum-keeper opens up an option for an extra all-rounder in the side.
So, where does this leave Samson, who is also set to leave Rajasthan Royals this season? May be a second wicketkeeper's slot for the second time in a row.
Asia Cup 2025 will kick start on September 9. The Men in Blue will play their first match against the UAE on September 10 at the Dubai International Stadium.
