In his Maharashtra debut at the ongoing Buchi Babu tournament, Indian batsman Prithvi Shaw smashed a century during a match against Chhattisgarh on Tuesday.
In the first innings, the right-hander scored a century, which came off 122 balls, including 14 boundaries and a maximum.
Riding on his knock, Maharashtra recovered from a dangerous position. At one stage in the game, the side had already lost four wickets for 15 runs after Shaw and Sachin Dhas delivered an opening partnership of 71 runs.
Later, after the departure of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ankeet Bawne, Shaw added 57 runs alongside Siddharth Mhatre for the fifth wicket.
After reaching his century with a single, Shaw quietly raised his bat and walked up to the other end to hug his partner.
Shaw made 111 off 141 balls before being stumped off the bowling of leg-spinner Shubham Agrawal. Chhattisgarh had made 252 in 89.3 overs on the opening day.
Shaw had earlier switched his allegiance from Mumbai to Maharashtra to revive his career.
Once seen as a future India star after his exploits in the U-19 World Cup and a scintillating century on Test debut, Shaw joined Maharashtra earlier this year amid concerns around his form and fitness.
He was dropped from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad last season and wasn’t picked for its Vijay Hazare Trophy campaign. Though he was part of the Mumbai squad for the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 in December, his returns were a meagre 197 runs with the bat.
Shaw last played for India in July 2021 and went unsold in last year’s IPL auction for the first time in his career. Currently, he seems to be out of the plans of the Indian selectors.
Team India will now gear up to participate in the Asia Cup 2025. The continental tournament will kick off on September 9, with the first match scheduled to be played between Afghanistan and Hong Kong.
The "Men in Blue" will begin their campaign on September 10 with a match against the UAE. The mega clash between arch-rivals India and Pakistan is scheduled to be played on September 14 at the Dubai International Stadium. India will then conclude their group stage matches by playing against Oman on September 19.
