Former South Africa fast bowler and now commentator Fanie de Villiers has said that minor Test-playing nations, including his country, are “getting bullied” and that winning multiple series consistently is the only way to make their presence felt.
The 62-year-old de Villiers spoke with mid-day from South Africa a day after Temba Bavuma’s Proteas defeated Australia 2-1 in the three-Test series, their first home Tests after winning the WTC final 16 months earlier. He said: “The minor countries in the world are getting bullied. India, Australia and England are right at the top. They’re calling the shots. Money is more there. There is more money to be made in tours. The only way that South Africa can really shout the odds is if they win series after series. And that’s what we started with now,” he said.
