Team India will lock horns against Australia in the white-ball series from October 19. The first ODI match will be at the Optus Stadium in Perth.

Before T20Is, the 'Men in Blue' will play the three-match ODI series against the Aussies. Ahead of the bilateral tournament, Rohit Sharma has been snubbed from the captaincy role.

In his place, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has named Shubman Gill as the new skipper in the 50-over format.

Speaking about Gill's appointment for the captaincy role, former skipper Sourav Ganguly backed the call, stating that he doesn't really see the decision as a problem.

"I think it has been done in consultation with Rohit, from outside... I don't know what's inside," said Ganguly.

He also stated that Sharma can help Gill in the captaincy role while donning the Indian ODI colours.

"Somewhere down the line, I feel that it's a fair call. Rohit can keep playing and in the meantime, you keep grooming a young captain. So, I really don't see a problem in that," said the veteran of 311 ODI matches.

So far, the 25-year-old has made 55 ODI appearances and amassed 2,775 runs, with a top score of 208 runs. The right-hander also has 15 half-centuries and eight tons to his name in the format.

Ganguly also spoke about the England Test series, where Team India managed to register a 2-2 draw under Gill's captaincy.

Speaking about his leadership, the former cricketer said, "It's too early. For the tour of England, I thought he was brilliant. I have seen the five-Test series. The way he has played and the way he has captained the team is extraordinary".

"That is why he has been made the captain of the ODI team for the future. Lot of potential, both as a player and captain," he concluded.

India's squad for the ODI series against Australia: Shubman Gill (Captain), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer (VC), Axar Patel, KL Rahul (WK), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Yashasvi Jaiswal.
