England came victorious by 22 runs in the third Test match against Team India at the Lord's Cricket Ground. After victory at the iconic venue, the hosts' skipper Ben Stokes revealed that fierce pacer Jofra Archer watched the highlights of former Team India captain Sourav Ganguly's famous jersey-waving moment at the venue, which in return helped him to deliver a match-winning spell.
"I just said to him this morning, I said, 'You know what today is, don't you? And it was that highlight package from when India knocked off 300-odd back in the day, when Ganguly, he thought that was a World Cup final as well. He thought that was six years today. Genuine. And I was like, no, that World Cup that we won, he was like, oh, that one. Gosh, he's an absolute beauty, that boy," Stokes told reporters during the press conference.
Sourav Ganguly, 23 years ago, waved his shirt on the Lord's balcony, which goes down as an iconic scene from India's memorable NatWest final win in 2002 over England.
Making a comeback to the longest format of the game, Archer bagged two wickets by conceding 52 runs in 23.2 overs in the first innings of the match. In the second essay, the 30-year-old returned with the figures of three wickets for 55 runs in just 16 overs.
In the first innings, Archer accounted for the wickets of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Washington Sundar. In the second innings, he yet again cleaned up Jaiswal and Sundar, and additionally dismissed swashbuckling Rishabh Pant.
The pacer was shouldered by skipper Stokes, who claimed three wickets as well. Brydon Carse bagged two, followed by Shoaib Bashir, and Chris Woakes' one wicket each.
In the final innings of the match, Team India's star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja fought hard by smashing an unbeaten 61 runs, but fell short to take his team home. The visitors suffered a loss by 22 runs. Currently, in the five-match Test series, the hosts have a lead of 2-1.
The date July 14 holds special significance for English cricket and its fans. On the same day in 2019, England lifted their maiden ODI World Cup title at the 'Home of Cricket'. Fast forward six years, England felt euphoria after five days of hard work, grit and resilience.
