England clinched a nail-biting 22-run win over India in the third Test at Lord’s on Monday, taking a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. In a contest that swayed dramatically across five days, it was Shoaib Bashir who sealed the result with the final wicket, as India’s spirited chase fell just short of a historic win.
Chasing 193 for victory on a deteriorating pitch, India were bowled out for 170 shortly after the tea break on Day 5. The final blow came in heartbreaking fashion, Mohammed Siraj, the last man standing alongside a resolute Ravindra Jadeja, tried to defend Bashir but the ball trickled off his bat, bounced awkwardly, and rolled back onto the stumps to dislodge a solitary bail. A stunned Siraj stood in disbelief, while Bashir sprinted off in celebration. England’s players gathered around Siraj to offer consolation.
If Mohammed Siraj had stopped that ball from hitting the stumps with his foot, we would have won the match. We lost the match after so much hard work of Ravindra Jadeja.🥺💔 #INDvsENG

Jadeja was the standout performer for India, finishing unbeaten on 61. He fought a lone battle for much of the innings, expertly shepherding the tail while steadily narrowing the target. He forged crucial partnerships first with Jasprit Bumrah and later with Siraj, defying a relentless English attack that sensed victory but struggled to land the final blow.
Earlier, India resumed the final day on 58 for 4, needing another 135 runs to seal what would have been one of their finest wins on English soil. However, the morning session proved disastrous for the visitors, as they slumped to 112 for 8. Jofra Archer delivered a hostile spell, removing Rishabh Pant and Washington Sundar in quick succession, while Ben Stokes accounted for KL Rahul with a sharp in-swinger. Chris Woakes added to the damage by dismissing Nitish Reddy just before lunch.
Despite the setbacks, India clawed their way back through grit and determination. Bumrah faced 54 balls for his three runs, frustrating England before falling to Stokes late in the second session. That left Siraj to accompany Jadeja in a tense final passage of play. They added 25 runs for the last wicket, bringing India within 22 runs of win, before Siraj’s unlucky dismissal ended the brave resistance.
England’s win ensured they reclaimed the momentum in the series, having lost the second Test at Nottingham. The action now shifts to Headingley, where India will aim to bounce back and level the series.
