Amid the BCCI's decision to name N Jagadeesan as Rishab Pant's replacement in the side, the Tamil Nadu cricketer will face tough competition from Dhruv Jurel.
However, as the way things go, it seems difficult to fit the batsmen in the playing XI, as Jurel would be the likely choice for the role, especially because of the nature of the match.
Team India has reached this position after securing a dominating draw in the fourth of the five-match Test series against England. Both sides will now clash against each other for the series decider in the fifth Test match.
In the fifth Test match, Team India will miss the services of its swashbuckling batsman, Rishabh Pant. The left-hander sustained an injury on his foot while facing Chris Woakes in the fourth Test.
Jagadeesan, so far, has no exposure to English conditions, but has been a stalwart in the domestic circuit. On the other hand, Jurel can't be termed as a well-experienced option for the role, as he has played just four Test matches for the side.
In a situation where a win could help India draw the series, the management will most likely give a nod to Jurel, who has little to no experience.
The third option for India will be the in-form batsman KL Rahul but the veteran has been delivering consistent performances at the top of the batting order, and the think tank will not like to make changes in his position.
Also, after keeping the wicket for several overs, it will be exhausting for Rahul to yet again open the innings for the Shubman Gill-led side. One of the major concerns for Gautam Gambhir and Co. will be the feature of their lead pacer, Jasprit Bumrah.
Earlier, the pacer was advised not to play consecutive Test matches, considering his workload management. Following the advice, the management made him play three games of the series, but the visitors have now found themselves in a situation in which Bumrah's presence would be ideal for a win.
If he misses out on the match, Prasidh Krishna and Akash Deep are the two options available for the final game. Arshdeep Singh, who has been an exceptional performer for the side in the white-ball formats, is yet to make his debut in Test cricket. He was unavailable for the selection for the fourth Test due to injury.
