Ireland finished their innings at a respectable 182 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in their 20 overs against the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/sports/cricket/article/t20-world-cup-2026-india-win-the-t20-world-cup-for-the-third-time-to-become-the-first-team-ever-to-defend-their-title-23619880" rel="nofollow">T20 World champions, India</a>.
After losing early wickets, Ireland fought back largely due to a middle-order partnership between Gareth Delany and Lorcan Tucker. The duo scored 64 runs in 44 balls to bring the Irish innings back on track after losing three wickets in the powerplay.
Captain Lorcan Tucker scored 50 runs in 36 balls, while Gareth Delany scored a quickfire 49 off 32 balls to power Ireland to 182 runs.&nbsp;
For India, <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/sports/cricket/article/kkr-pacer-harshit-rana-set-to-miss-most-of-the-ipl-due-to-knee-injury-23621187" rel="nofollow">pacer Harshit Rana</a> was the pick of the bowlers, taking three wickets in his four overs. Meanwhile, Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel chipped in with two wickets each for the visitors. Prasidh Krishna was the most expensive bowler, conceding 57 runs in his four overs without taking a wicket.
Team India will hope that the Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma opening combination will give them a quick start to chase down the total.
Earlier, after winning the toss, the new Indian T20I skipper, Shreyas Iyer, was happy to bowl first. The Indian star on what he described as a &lsquo;good pitch&rsquo;. Iyer also confirmed that <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/sports/cricket/article/words-cant-explain-it-vaibhav-sooryavanshi-on-team-india-selection-23636452" rel="nofollow">teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi</a> would have to wait for his debut due to team combinations.
&ldquo;We&rsquo;re going to field first. It looks a good pitch. Yeah, it&rsquo;s a new surface for us, and it&rsquo;s the first time, and the majority of us haven&rsquo;t played over here. So, considering the conditions, the environment, and also the wicket, we have decided to field first. (Vaibhav playing?) Unfortunately, no. He&rsquo;s a gun player. But obviously, we&rsquo;ve got tremendous experience in the squad who have done brilliantly in the past couple of series for India. For now, we are going with three genuine seamers, one all-rounder, and two spinners.&rdquo; Iyer said.
