Mumbai Indians failed to cross the line at Wankhede Stadium last night and allowed Rising Pune Supergiant to sneak home by three runs for a repeat show just like in their opening game on April 6 at Pune.
Responding to Pune's score of 160 for six in 20 overs, the hosts ended up with 157 for eight in 20 overs. Skipper Rohit Sharma's 58 went in vain.
Earlier, riding on a disciplined bowling performance, especially by leggie Karn Sharma and pacer Jasprit Bumrah, the hosts restricted Rising Pune Supergiant to 160 for six in 20 overs.
After being put into bat, Pune's opening pair of Ajinkya Rahane (38 off 32 balls) and Rahul Tripathi (45 off 31 balls) started well, but senior pros like skipper Steven Smith (17) and MS Dhoni (7) failed to capitalise.
Mumbai boy Rahane with his new look - without a beard - showed intent by hitting a good length delivery over the cover fence off Mitchell Johnson. Rahane also showed how runs can scored with perfect technique in T20 cricket by hitting a classical straight drive off Mitchell McClenaghan followed by a well-timed shot off Johnson's third delivery in his second over towards sightscreen for four.
Rahane played a superb on-drive off the back foot off leggie Karn to earn a boundary off the last ball in the power play, but failed against the same bowler while trying to hit him over long off, for an easy return catch to Karn.
Rahane's opening partner Tripathi, who anchored RPS win with a fine 59 against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Saturday, played yet another sensible knock and put on 76 for the opening wicket with Rahane. The 26-year-old Maharashtra batsman got to 45 in just 31 balls with two sixes and three boundaries before falling prey to Karn.
Ben Stokes was bowled by Johnson for 17 off 12 balls while Manoj Tiwari, who came in at No.6, scored a useful 22 with four hits to the fence.
Leggie Karn, who replaced the injured Krunal Pandya, claimed two wickets and almost sent back Pune skipper Smith, but the Australian batsman was dropped by Harbhajan Singh at deep square leg while trying to sweep. Bumrah claimed two for 29 while Johnson and Harbhajan got one apiece.
