Punjab Kings’ ace spinner Yuzvendra Chahal missed his second consecutive Indian Premier League (IPL) match on Monday due to a finger injury, but there is optimism within the camp that he will be fully fit ahead of the all-important playoffs. The 33-year-old, who became the most expensive spinner in IPL auction history with a staggering Rs 18 crore price tag, sat out the team's final league match against Mumbai Indians, having also missed the previous clash against Delhi Capitals.

According to a BCCI source quoted by PTI, Chahal is on the mend and is expected to recover in time for the playoffs. His return would be a major boost for Punjab Kings, who have qualified for the knockout stages for the first time since their memorable 2014 campaign.

In Chahal’s absence, left-arm spinner Harpreet Brar has shouldered the responsibility of leading the spin attack. Brar has delivered commendable performances, claiming 14 wickets in 12 matches at an average of 25.28 and an economy rate of 9.56. His tally includes two four-wicket hauls, further proving his growing value to the side in Chahal's absence.

With the league stage now complete, Punjab Kings will shift base from Jaipur to their home ground in Mullanpur, which will host both Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator. The team, riding high on momentum, will be hoping for a strong showing in front of their home crowd as they aim for their maiden IPL title.

The team’s resurgence this season can be largely credited to the fruitful partnership between captain Shreyas Iyer and head coach Ricky Ponting. Their strategic acumen and cohesive leadership have revitalised a franchise that has struggled for consistency since the league’s inception in 2008.

However, bowling continues to be a concern for the Punjab outfit. While the batting unit has consistently performed, the bowling department has lacked depth, and the upcoming playoffs will test their resolve further. The departure of South African pacer Marco Jansen after the league stage could prove to be a significant blow. Jansen played a crucial role in the middle overs, and with him unavailable, the onus will fall on New Zealand’s Kyle Jamieson to fill the void.
