Even after posting massive 200 runs, Knight Riders go down to Kings XI Punjab; thanks to Mahela ton
A super century by former Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardane, a depleted Kings XI Punjab chased a massive 200 target put up by Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens Stadium on Sunday.
Punjab who are out of contention for the semi-final berth were playing for pride. They started off with a 50-run Partnetship between the openers Manvinder Bisla (18) and Mahela.
Punjab skipper Kumar Sangakkara (38) was the only wicket to fall.
Thereafter some hard-hitting from Mahela and Yuvraj Singh (33) saw the team home.
Earlier Sourav Ganguly won the toss and elected to bat. A hurricane 42-ball 88 from Chris Gayle powered Kolkata Knight Riders to 200 for three against Kings XI Punjab.
Gayle smashed eight sixes and six fours in his blistering knock to power Knight Riders to their highest IPL III total.
The West Indies opener and Manoj Tiwary (35 from 32 balls) added 101 runs for the second wicket, while captain Sourav Ganguly chipped in with a 31-ball 36.
KKR's previous highest in IPL III was also against the Punjab side when they scored 183 for five for a winning cause in Mohali.
Having opted to rest big-hitting Kiwi opener Brendon McCullum, who joined the squad yesterday, KKR began positively with Ganguly looking in his silken touch.
