Tamil Nadu managed to restrict hosts Mumbai to 314 for seven on Day One of the Group C Ranji Trophy match at the MCA-BKC ground yesterday. The highlight of the day was a chanceless century by Mumbai opener Prithvi Shaw, who displayed outstanding footwork to execute his cover drives, on drives, sweeps and a couple of upper cuts too.

He hit Ravichandran Ashwin's third ball of the day thourgh the covers and welcomed left-arm spinner Rahil Shah by hitting him for a six off his fourth delivery over the long-on fence. Shaw employed the sweep shots to counter the spin of Ashwin, who went wicketless in his first spell of five overs. At the start of his second spell, Ashwin had four fielders on the boundary fence. Shaw got his 50 in just 63 deliveries.
Maiden ton on home turf Unbeaten on 76 at the luncheon interval, Shaw got to his maiden first-class century on home turf with a lofted shot towards long-on fence off Shah. Shaw faced 39 deliveries from Ashwin and scored 27 runs which included three hits to the fence. However, the offie got his man by bowling wide of the crease to get the desired angle and had him caught at first slip by Baba Indrajith.
Like Shaw, one-drop batsman Shreyas Iyer too played aggressively and got to his half-century before lunch. Iyer celebrated his India T20 call-up with a quickfire 57 off 52 balls, hitting seven fours and two sixes. He dispatched Ashwin over the long on fence to reach 38. He again stepped out to hit his second six, this time off Shah over long-off to get his half-century.
However, the prolific run-scorer lost his concentration to offered an easy edge to wicketkeeper Narayan Jagadeesan off medium pacer Vijay Shankar's outgoing delivery. Shaw and Iyer shared a 98-run stand for the second wicket in just 118 balls. Mumbai skipper Aditya Tare showed lot of patience to score 53 with the help of four hits to the fence and a six off Ashwin.
Earlier, TN pacer Yo Mahesh, who was playing for his state after a gap of four years, needed just three balls to claim his 100th first-class wicket which came in the form of opener Akhil Herwadkar (0).
Milestone for Yo Mahesh Yo Mahesh also got rid of Mumbai vice-captain Suryakumar Yadav (39), trapped leg before wicket just four minutes before lunch. Vijay Shankar was the most successful TN bowler, claiming three for 37 in 8.1 overs.
