Team Bangladesh at World Cup
Bangladesh have the advantage of playing all their league matches at home - the only team able to do this. As such they shouldn't have any problems dispatching the minnows of the group, it will most likely come down to them or the West Indies progressing to the quarter-finals. In the 2007 World Cup, they upset India and this time around too they begin their challenge against India in the opening match of the tournament. They will definitely miss the all-round skills of Mashrafe Mortaza, but under Shakib Al Hasan they have improved leaps and bounds in ODIs ufffd a 4-0 drubbing of New Zealand the zenith of that run.
Shakib Alhasan / Captainu00a0
Ever since coming into the national team, Shakib al Hasan has gone from strength to strength. He started out as a bowler who can bat a bit, but has turned into a genuine all-rounder and a valuable asset for his team. Under Shakib, Bangladesh have acquired a maturity in their game and also won their first-ever overseas Test series against the West Indies - a series in which the captain led from the front, picking up 13 wickets and the Man of the Series prize. In the ODI game, he has scored two fine hundreds including one against a very good Pakistan bowling line-up and also played an important role in taking Bangladesh to their firstever tri-series final. Bowling in tandem with fellow left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak, he has dealt a number of crucial blows.
Tamim Iqbal
An attacking batsman and an electrifying fielder, Tamim has become a vital cog in the Bangladesh team in a short time. With nearly 3000 runs in 89 matches, he is also prolific when compared to other batsmen in his team. His 154 against Zimbabwe is a Bangladesh record high-score and most importantly came in a successful chase.
Mohammad Ashraful
Easily Bangladesh's best batsman, fearless Ashraful is best known as cricket's youngest Test centurion. He is attacking to a fault and after being saddled with the pressure of captaincy at an early age, he has started to regain the confidence that made him a dangerous package. His best ODI innings was his first ton, which helped Bangladesh to a shock win over Australia in England.
Abdur Razzak
A prolific wicket-taker, Razzak has overcome suspect bowling action troubles to be one of Bangladesh's strike bowlers. He has 162 wickets in 111 matches and is sure to be a key component of the spin-dominated attack. He can also chip in with valuable runs in the lower order.
Mushfiqur Rahim
A young, very steady wicketkeeper, Rahim has turned into a reliable lower order batsman. In a team dominated by spinners, his glovework behind the stumps (78 dismissals in 84 matches) is more crucial than his batting and in that he doesn't fail to deliver. He also holds the record for the fastest Test century by a Bangladeshi, a crunching 101 against India.
Shafiul Islam
A right-arm fast bowler with decent pace and sting, Shafiul has forced his way into a side without any steady fast bowling options. He has made a name for himself in the short time that he has played, with 32 wickets at just over 30 apiece. He can also slog a bit as evidenced by a Test fifty.
Shahriar Nafeesu00a0
A left-handed opener, Shahriar made an impression at a very early age (a maiden century against Australia) and was named his country's player of the year in 2006. But 2008 onwards, he faded away after a string of low scores. Now he is back as one of the senior batsmen in the team and can bulk up the middle order or provide an extra option at the top.
WC Recordu00a0
Bangladesh are relatively new to World Cups and only debuted in
1999 - Ousted in the first round, but got two wins. One against Scotland, and the other one was the upset win over Pakistan.u00a0
2003 - Finished bottom of their group having won no matches.u00a0
2007 - Terrific start to the World Cup with a win over India. They got one other win in the Super Eights, beating South Africa.
