Mumbai’s young cricketers have a unique opportunity to showcase their skills through the inaugural U-17 Monsoon Cricket League (MCL), beginning on August 15. Former Mumbai Ranji probable Austin Coutinho, who is instrumental in organising the MCL, believes the league, with its tough conditions, will help develop the basics of young cricketers.
“It will be a 10 team league for talented U-17 players. It’s a platform to bring forth young talent. I have played in the Kanga League [played in the monsoons] which has been going on across Mumbai’s maidans for many years. The league toughens you up and prepares you for the upcoming season. Similarly, youngsters can excel through MCL. Also, most clubs do not field their U-17 players, so these youngsters are unfortunately left out as extras, doing scoring, and other jobs. Gaining experience through the MCL could help them get a good break,” Coutinho told mid-day on Thursday.
“All MCL matches will be played at the Vivenakand Education Society ground in Chembur. Some of the confirmed teams are Evolve CA, Koli Foundation, Dinesh Salunkhe CA, Believe CA, General Education CA, Titan CA and two teams from VES Academy,” said Coutinho, Sports Director of VES.
