Former India women’s captain Diana Edulji reckons that the team’s maiden ICC Women’s ODI World Cup triumph, achieved by beating South Africa in the final at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai exactly a year ago, remains the biggest moment in Indian women’s cricket. Powered by opener Shafali Verma’s 87 and all-rounder Deepti Sharma’s 58 and 5-39, Harmanpreet Kaur-led India defeated Laura Wolvaardt’s South Africa by 52 runs to clinch their maiden World Cup title.
“It was absolutely the biggest moment in women’s cricket. We had been struggling to win the World Cup. We came very close in 2017, when we lost to England by nine runs in the final at Lord’s. In 2005, we lost to Australia by 98 runs at Centurion, while in the 2020 T20 World Cup final, we went down to hosts Australia by 85 runs. But reaching the 2017 final was the turning point, when we realised that we could win a World Cup. After losing three matches on the trot in 2025, our comeback to beat Australia in the semi-final was outstanding.
