Here’s why newly launched FIFA World Cup 2026 ball, Trionda, is a technological marvel

Tri stands for the three host nations, represented by three colours — blue for USA, red for Canada and green for Mexico, while Onda is a Spanish word for wave or vibe and refers to the curved pattern

The Trionda is stitched together from four fluid panels while the Al Rihla (2022 World Cup ball) comprised of 20 geometric panels

This is the first ball to be designed keeping in mind the varying climate as the 2026 World Cup will take place across 16 host cities, from Vancouver, Canada at one end to Mexico City at the other

There are also certain colourful elements referring to each host nation, like a star for USA, a maple leaf for Canada and an eagle for Mexico

The Trionda has been tested to perform consistently at different levels of humidity

The ball has a special texture that offers extra grip to ensure it feels the same at the feet of any player regardless of the venue or weather conditions

Based on an advanced version of Adidas’s Connected Ball Technology, the ball will have a chip powered by Artificial Intelligence which will be lodged in the side of the ball rather than its more central location as was done four years ago with the Al Rihla, match ball

The chip will transmit accurate real time data to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, which will help fasten decision-making both on and off-field

The chip can also help match officials identify every  individual touch of the ball and this data can be used for post-match analysis

Price: Rs 15,000 (US$ 170)
