Accolade decimates rivals to win Pune Derby

Pune: Champion colt Accolade, piloted by ace jockey Trevor Patel, moved up with gigantic strides approaching the final furlong of the 2,000-meter trip, and surged away for an impressive four-length victory in the Kingfisher Ultra Pune Derby (Gr 1), the feature event of the Sunday card. Trained by Pesi Shroff and owned by Dr & Mrs Vijay Mallya representing the United Racing Bloodstock Breeders (URBB) Ltd, the super colt registered his fifth victory from six career starts.

All in the family
In the process Accolade won a rich purse of Rs 42,67,500 put up by none other than his owners URBB who sponsored the Pune Derby for the first time this year. The colt raced in liquor baron Vijay Mallya's famous silks of 'White, black V, red cap', and was also bred at URBB's Kunigal stud farm where his sire, Burden Of Proof who passed away recently, stood during his illustrious breeding career.

Miraculous espape
When Trevor Patel set alight Accolade and challenged leader Vulcan (Kavraj Singh up) whom he was stalking all the way of the ten-furlong trip, Accolade went dangerously close to Vulcan, and despite Trevor immediately changing whip from left to the right hand to control his mount, Vulcan clipped the hind legs of Accolade resulting in what a looked like a dangerous fall for Kavraj. However, Kavraj had a miraculous escape as his horse Vulcan instinctively avoided any brush with the fallen jockey's body by jumping over him, and jockey Srinath astride Unforgettable You displayed exemplary reflexes to quickly slow down his filly.

Next stop Mahalaxmi
Hardik over the moon to receive MoM award on debutIn a post-race chat, trained Pesi Shroff laid out Accolade's future plans. "We will first target the Indian 2000 Guineas at Mahalaxmi," he said, "and then the Indian Derby." The Mumbai season, which will begin on November 20, has those two races scheduled for December this year and February next year respectively.
