Alpine SG Pipers upset two-time defending champions Triveni Continental Kings to clinch the third edition of the Global Chess League on Thursday.

The Pipers were at their dominant best, winning  the first rapid match 4-2 with black pieces and then scoring a 4.5-1.5 win with white.

Nino Batsiashvili and Leon Luke Mendonca again proved how valuable they have been to SG Pipers by winning their respective games, and although Continental Kings’s Alireza Firouzja beat Fabiano Caruana  to bring his team back in contention, Anish Giri’s win over Wei Yi meant that the Pipers took the first match 4-2 In the second match, R Praggnanandhaa gave Pipers an early edge with a win over Vidit Gujrathi and Anish Giri then registered his second win over Wei Yi before Caruana then scored a full point against Alireza to seal victory.
