Finishing off with a 1-1 draw against a better team in England may seem an achievement but India would also rue the number of missed opportunities in the penalty corner department.
India missed nine penalty corners, eight of them in the second quarter and the ninth in the fourth. Still, India lived to fight for a place in the final. India's opening goal came against the run of play when a lovely move down the right flank saw Ramandeep, Talwinder and then Shilanand Lakra hammer the ball in. But the opening minutes belonged to England and India must be thankful to Suraj Karkera, who stood up to the rampaging English forwards. If India missed its penalty corners, a few of them brilliantly saved by the English goalkeeper Harry Gibson, the English also suffered technically, losing possession and giving away balls to the Indians.
There were several sharp chances for India in the third and fourth quarter before England struck back with a stroke after a stick-check in the dee. Mark Gleghorne beat Krishan Pathak, who replaced Karkera under the bar.
India could have still snatched a winner but Ramandeep and Gurjant missed one-on-one situations. Indian coach Sjoerd Marijne said he wasn't too unhappy with the result. "There were some PCs that were good and credit should go to the goalkeeper for saving them But we need to learn from all this." India take on Australia on Tuesday.
