Czech badminton player Petr Koukal will carry his country’s flag at Friday’s Olympic Games opening ceremony, less than two years after being diagnosed with testicular cancer.

The Czech Badminton Federation described the choice of Koukal as standard-bearer as “a small step for mankind, a big step for Czech badminton and a huge leap for Peter Koukal”.
