India's Somdev Devvarman failed to make use of his lucky break to participate in the ATP Toronto Masters, losing in straight sets to France's Gael Monfils 6-7, 3-6 in the first round yesterday.<br /><br />Devvarman got a chance when Chile's Fernando Gonzalez, who has not played since the French Open due to a left calf injury, pulled out.<br /><br />Other late night results: 1st rd: Michael Llodra bt Santiago Giraldo 7-6 (8/6), 7-5; Philipp Kohlschreiber bt Janko Tipsarevic 2-2 retired; Jeremy Chardy bt Marcos Baghdatis 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (7/4); David Nalbandian bt David Ferrer 7-5, 3-6, 6-3; Xavier Malisse bt Michael Berrer 7-6 (7/2), 6-2.
