It was a disappointing day for Indian boxers at the XV AIBA World Boxing Championships yesterday with both boxers going out in Milan.

Mayengbam Suronjay lost to Nyambayar Tugstsogt by a technical knock out in the flyweight (51 kg) event.

Tugstsogt took the early initiative claiming the first round 5 points to 2 but he Indian fought back in the second round to claim it 6-2. The third was a close call with Tugstsogt winning 3-2 and getting level on points at 10-10. The decision went to the judges and the five voted for Tugstsogt, bring an end to the Indian's challenge on the opening day itself.

In the Light Welter Weight (64kg) category, Manoj Kumar also went down in a tough contest to Brazil's Carvaho Myke 5-4. Both boxers were happy to be on the defensive and after the first two rounds, the Brazilian was a clear favourite leading 5-1. But Kumar rallied brilliantly, attacking more than he did in the first two rounds, to secure three points without conceding any. Unfortunately, the fightback came just a little late for the Indian.
