Indian Grandmaster Nihal Sarin, representing S8UL Esports, qualified for the Play-offs at the ongoing Esports World Cup (EWC) here, after beating Dutchman Anish Giri and France’s Maxime Vachier-Lagrave. Sarin’s quarter-final opponent is five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen

After a tough 0-2 loss to fellow Indian GM Arjun Erigaisi on Day One, Sarin made a strong comeback on Day 2. Showcasing his lightning-fast decision-making, he secured a 2-0 victory over Giri in the lower bracket semi-final, before downing Vachier-Lagrave 1.5-0.5 in the lower bracket final. “It feels great to make it to the playoffs, especially after such intense games vs Anish and Maxime,” said Sarin.
