Esha Singh upstaged double Olympic-medallist Manu Bhaker to clinch gold in the women’s 25m pistol event of the ISSF World Cup (Rifle/Pistol/Shotgun) here on Monday.
Singh, 21, produced a commanding display in the final, registering 40 hits to seal top honours, while Bhaker fought through a tense, highly-competitive field, winning a crucial shoot-off before finishing with 28 hits to secure bronze.
“This match was very stressful for me because of the previous medal I had won [at the World Cup in Munich, earlier this season]. The better you get in your event, the more you feel that weight of prestige you have to conquer. I’m happy that I was able to get past it [the pressure] today and grateful that I had the ability to endure it,” said Singh.
“I really love competing here in Hangzhou [she won four medals here at the 2022 Asian Games]. Being familiar with the range, the lighting, and the atmosphere in the final hall definitely counted in my favour,” Singh added.
Meanwhile, Bhaker shrugged off any disappointment by suggesting she now knows what to work on for the upcoming major tournament.
“This medal acts as a stepping stone. It gives me clarity on what is working and the direction I want to head in. This will help me at the World hampionships and Asian Games.”
