Nisar Tamboli, the 47-year-old ips officer collapsed while running the Mumbai Marathon yesterday. He was rushed to Jaslok Hospital where he was admitted in the Intensive Care Unit, but doctors there ruled out symptoms of a cardiac arrest.&nbsp;
Tamboli participates in marathons and doesn't suffer from diabetes or hypertension. In fact, he underwent medical check-ups only a few months ago.
Tamboli was disoriented and suffered a short-term memory loss when he was admitted. Fearing a cardiac arrest, he was sent to the Peddar Road hospital's ICU. He was given intravenous fluids and regained full orientation within short time. Inadequate water intake over the last few days probably caused his collapse. He was kept under observation in the ICU for a night. Dr Shoaib Padaria, senior cardiologist at Jaslok Hospital, said: "With the memory of a leading Mumbai doctor losing his life due to a heart attack whilst training for the marathon still fresh in our minds, we have to be extremely vigilant and alert in managing all such cases."
Around 2,500 runners needed medical attention yesterday. Asian Heart Institute, the medical partner of the marathon handled the cases.
