The Indian women's hockey team maintained their winning form at the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/sports/other-sports/article/fih-hockey-womens-nations-cup-hockey-india-announces-indian-womens-hockey-team-for-marquee-event-23633294" rel="nofollow">FIH Hockey Women's Nations Cup</a> New Zealand 2025-26, securing a 3-2 win against Uruguay in their final group fixture in Auckland.
Forward Deepika starred with a brace, while Deepika Soreng also got her name on the scoresheet.
This hard-fought victory guaranteed India the top spot in Pool A, courtesy of an unbeaten record with three back-to-back wins over the USA, <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/sports/other-sports/article/india-beat-japan-3-1-win-fih-women-s-series-finals-21207159" rel="nofollow">Japan</a>, and Uruguay. The United States also booked their ticket to the knockout rounds by finishing as the runners-up in the group.
The match saw Chiara Appennino (13') and Manuela Vilar (55') score for Uruguay, whereas India&rsquo;s goals were scored by Deepika (24', 56') and Deepika Soreng (43'). In a thrilling contest, <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/sports/other-sports/article/fih-womens-hockey-india-women-lose-to-england-0-2-in-final-23620849" rel="nofollow">Team India</a> came out on top and ended as the table-toppers on their way to the semi-final.
Uruguay broke the deadlock in the 13th minute when Chiara executed a penalty corner right before the conclusion of the first quarter. India mounted a fightback and levelled the match before half-time when Deepika scored from a 24th-minute penalty corner.
<h2>India booked a semi-final spot after a commanding win</h2>
The game completely changed in the second half when India played at the top of their game. The constant attacks paid off in the 43rd minute, when Deepika Soreng scored to give India a 2-1 lead before the final stretch.
Uruguay fought back and managed to pull off an equaliser in the 55th minute through a strike by their skipper, Manuela. However, merely sixty seconds later, Deepika successfully dispatched her second penalty corner of the night, restoring India's 3-2 lead and putting the game to bed.
Statistically, India dictated the attacking narrative for most of the match, securing seven penalty corners while restricting Uruguay to just two, and making the most of their set-piece opportunities to complete the turnaround.
Riding high on three straight triumphs, the Indian team enters the semifinals as they continue their hunt for the FIH Nations Cup trophy and qualification for the FIH Pro League. They will face off against either Korea or Chile in the semifinals on June 20.
