Indian Navy clinched the 97th MCC Murugappa Gold Cup, beating Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) 5-4 via penalty shootout after the scores were locked 1-1 at the end of regulation time at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Hockey Stadium here on Sunday.
Navy’s substitute goalkeeper Ankit Malik emerged the hero once again, repeating his semi-final exploits against Indian Railways. Malik denied Deepak Pradhan and Sudeep Chirmako, the latter during sudden death, to help Navy seal the title. Navy took the lead through Abhishek Topno (14th min), who converted off Pawan Rajbhar’s cross from the left flank after the team had gradually taken control of the game.
