Manika Batra beats Hamamoto in Polish Open quarters

Young Indian paddler Manika Batra beat higher-ranked Yui Hamamoto of Japan to enter the girls' singles semi-finals at the IITF Polish Junior Open in Wladyslawowo, Poland yesterday.

Eighteen-year-old Batra, who won a bronze at the Commonwealth Championships here earlier in the month, chalked out a 9-11, 11-9, 11-7, 10-12, 11-3, 12-10 win over the third seed in the quarter-finals.

Batra was supposed to square up against another Japanese Ayane Morita in the semi-finals later yesterday. u00a0The Indian had ended the hopes of Germany’s Theresa Kraft with a 13-11, 11-3, 11-9, 10-12, 11-7 win in the round of 16.u00a0
