<p align="center"><span style="font-size: 8pt">Venus Williams returns to Dementieva</span></p></td></tr></tbody></table>There were mixed fortunes for the Williams sisters on the opening day of the Sony Ericsson Championship in Doha.<br /><br />Second seed Serena struggled before beating NO 3 Svetlana Kuznetsova 7-6 (8-6) 7-5 in an even contest.<br /><br />However, defending champion Venus, who is competing alongside her sister in the Maroon Group, fell to Elena Dementieva 3-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-2 in her opening tie. It was Dementieva's first win over Venus in five years.<br /><br />Meanwhile, in the White Group, Victoria Azarenka made short work of Jelena Jankovic on her debut in Doha. The Belorussian raced to a 6-2 6-3 win in one hour 22 minutes in the opening match of the tournament, which features the Top 8 players in the world.
