St Joseph's&shy; High School [Wadala] failed to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Mumbai Schools Sports Association-organised inter-school U-16 Division I football tournament after going down 0-2 against Cathedral and John Connon [Fort] at Azad Maidan yesterday.
In a must-win game, the Wadala outfit failed to bring out their A game as they allowed the Fort school to dominate. Cathedral and John Connon, who had already fallen out of the race for a knockout berth, scored both their goals through Sumeir Zaveri. The Wadala school's defeat means St Francis D'Assisi High School [Borivli] qualify via a better goal difference despite losing 0-1 to Campion School [Cooperage] in their final league match. The Borivli outfit join Arya Vidya Mandir [Juhu], St Stanislaus High School [Bandra], Don Bosco High School 'A' [Borivli], Don Bosco High School 'A' [Matunga], St Mary's High School [Mazgaon], Campion School 'A' [Cooperage] and Jamnabai Narsee School [Juhu] in the quarters.
Meanwhile, in a Division II match, St Joseph's High School [Malad] rallied to hold Our Lady of Perpetual Succour High School [OLPS] [Chembur] to a 1-1 draw. OLPS took an early lead when Akhilesh Warman scored midway through the first half following a goalmouth scramble.
The Chembur outfit continued to attack through the wings as they troubled the St Joseph defence. The Malad school defenders managed to thwart waves of attack.
OLPS continued in the same fashion after the break, but despite breaking the St Joseph defence, they failed to get past the opposition goalkeeper. Just when the Chembur school looked like scoring, Shintre Aaren managed to break past the OPLS defence and scored the equaliser for St Joseph's.
