Waiting for the hooves: the Pune monsoon racetrack
The much-anticipated Pune racing season 2025 will kick off on Friday, July 18. The high-stakes extravaganza, spread across three-and-a-half months of pulsating action, and offering Rs 12 crore in prize money, will culminate on Sunday, November 2.
The stellar events, traditionally huge crowd pullers, start from the very first day in August with Gr 3, Eve Champion Trophy (Aug 3), followed by the Gr 3, Yohan Poonawalla Turf Club Trophy (Aug 10), the Teena Katrak Memorial Independence Million (Aug 15) and the Gr 3, FD Wadia Trophy (Aug 16). The Supreme Pune City Gold Cup is slated for Sep 14, setting the stage for the prestigious Gr 3, S A Poonawalla Million and Villoo C Poonawalla Million (Sep 15).
The crown jewels--both Gr 1 events--the Indian St. Leger (Sep 21) and the Pune Derby (Oct 12), will be accompanied by Major Baburao Sanas Memorial Million and the Gr 3, Noshir & Dolly Dhunjibhoy Sprint Million respectively. The three-week gap between the two Gr 1 events will be filled by the Gr 3, Threptin Fillies & Mares Stakes (Oct 5), and on Nov 2, the season will be signed off in style with the running of the Rajendrasinhji Million along with the Gr 2, RWITC Ltd Gold Cup.
The calendar is studded with equine star power, featuring 726 horses, including 274 two-year-olds. Expect fireworks from rising stars and seasoned racing professionals battling it out, with 31 trainers and 48 jockeys set to add spice to the season.
Four weekends, around important races, will offer carnival-like atmosphere of glamour, fashion, fun and food to entertain young generation whose attendance at the Pune racecourse in recent years has seen a steady rise in numbers thanks to the sponsors roped in by the race club.
